About Summer Dancecamp
Summer Dancecamp is an independent dance camp – not tied to any federation, club, school, or organisation.
For everyone; from children to senior - from beginners to world champions!
Our Story
How it all started
The idea for Summer Dancecamp was born in 2011 after a training weekend where Frank Høgh, a dedicated dance parent, and 5-time World Champions Kristina & Peter Stokkebroe talked about summer holidays and realised dancers didn’t have the same camp opportunities as many other sports.
Peter remembered his own childhood experience at a summercamp called “Vejleugen”, the highlight of his year, full of dancing, fun, and time with dance friends and competitors he didn’t see every day. That feeling became the foundation of Summer Dancecamp.
The First Camp in 2011
Our first camp was held in 2011 with 100 participants, at a regular school in Horsens. The participants slept on mattresses in classrooms - a little primitive but very cozy.
Even before the camp had ended, we could feel we had hit something which resonated deeply with the dancers, as the camp offered a combination of high-level dance education, time to socialize as well as created new friendships across boarders.
Moving to BGI Akademiet
Already the 2nd year, the camp had outcrown its first venue as we welcomed almost 200 participants. Therefore, we moved the camp the BGI Akademiet, a local boarding school just outside of Horsens, offering “real” accommodation, amazing facilities for both training and social activities, as well as on-site kitchen with staff well experienced in feeding hard working and ambitious athletes.
Growing into an International Camp
Today, Summer Dancecamp has hosted dancers from 40+ countries and participants of all ages and all levels - from first-time competitors to professional world top dancers. Our average participant volume has now grown to close to 500 participants annually, with a completely sold out camp year after year.
Traditions & New Initiatives
We work every year to develop the camp, adding new experiences without losing the traditions the dancers love, such as our amazing show night followed by the spectacular farewell party thursday evening; as well as our iconic "Golden Circle" during our daily evening practises.
In 2018, we introduced Summer Dancecup - our first competition held in connection with the camp, which turned out so successfull, that we have kept it going every since.
Frank's Legacy
Sadly, Frank Høgh passed away due to cancer in 2021. Frank was very passionate about Summer Dancecamp and our Summer Dancecup. We will therefore continue hosting this amazing event each year in honor of his memory and the great work he put into organizing and developing Summer Dancecamp into what we have today as one of the biggest and greatest camps.
Our Vision & Values
Our vision for Summer Dancecamp is to be a camp
- with a high professional leve of teaching
- with room for everyone
- offering friendships across ages, nationality, clubs, studios, and federations,
- with a strong focus on dance education and building a strong community
We find that majority of our dancers return year after year to continue their dancing education as well as reconnect with their lifelong friendsships formed at the camp. We therefore believe, that we have been quite successfull in building a camp that reflects our vision.
One of the key elements in our success is naturally our respect for all dancers and trainers. The camp wouldn't be the same without you.
